Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and the country's principal political, cultural, commercial and industrial center with approximately 2 million inhabitants. The city's recorded history begins with the Roman town of Aquincum, founded around 89 AD on the site of an earlier Celtic settlement. After nearly 150 years of Turkish occupation, Budapest and its region saw a new age of prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Buda on the right bank and Pest on the left bank merged in 1873 and became a single city.
