THE BIG ISLAND
The Big Island looms before us after a smooth crossing from Maui. Our first adventure is a kayak excursion in Opihihale, past ancient sea caves. Evening finds us donning wet suits and snorkeling off Kona to view the majestic manta rays as they glide underwater to feed on plankton. The next day, we head off on an exhilarating rib boat ride to Kealakekua Bay, where a monument to Captain Cook, the first documented European to reach the Hawaiian Islands, still stands.
The snorkeling experience in this bay is amazing. The bay’s crystal clear waters are filled with healthy coral reeks and schools of tropical fish. The ride back to the Safari Explorer is equally as exciting, as you can watch dolphins leaping in the air next to the rib. If you are lucky, you can even site a manta ray plowing the waters! Whales are always visible in the distance, too. It is an incredible once-in-a-lifetime natural experience.
We have an opportunity to enjoy an afternoon in Kona Town, filled with historical sites and a lovely town center. Evening finds us back on the Safari Explorer for our final dinner, and to say goodbye to fellow passengers and crew, with whom we bonded after this incredible week.
