St. Beatus Caves

Located high on a cliff overlooking Lake Thun, the St. Beatus Caves is definitely a must-see natural attraction if you are in the area. A spectacular path takes you from the main road past cascading waterfalls up to a museum, restaurant, and entrance to the caves. The cave tour takes you past stalactite and stalagmites, spectacular grottos, subterranean waterfalls, and other-worldly scenes. It’s no wonder that these caves inspired Tolkien, who visited the area as a youth, to write his vision for the Lord of the Rings fantasy world of Rivendell.
